Decorating Ideas, Unusual Home Goods and Decor Gifts

We shop all over the world to find home decor and gifts for you but you can probably tell from our home page that we especially love British goods. Among our popular British gifts there are many items inspired by British WWII Keep Calm and Carry On posters, Union Jack Flags and lots more.

You can read about the Keep Calm WWII poster in our What is Keep Calm and Carry On From section. Historic stories about the self confident ways of Eleanor Roosevelt and the visiting Queen Elizabeth I, speak to the importance of home entertaining in building friendships and even managing world affairs.

Jackie Kennedy knew this. When she moved into the White House, she was conscious to focus on American decorative accents and accessories. The patrician decorator Sister Parish helped her as did others. One thing all the great American decorators have had was ingenuity. Sister knew that you don't have to throw out your old sofa, couch or curtains and buy everything new when you start decorating a room. In fact, Sister was famous for doing things like buying wood furniture at flea market prices and painting it white for summer homes and using "rag rugs" and patchwork quilts.

Decorating simply does not have to be expensive. Take Billy Baldwin, another great American decorator(1903-1984), who by the way, also worked for Jackie O. He loved simple cotton fabrics like ticking and chose to live in a one room studio apartment. In one of his books, Billy Baldwin Decorates, Baldwin talks about how something as simple as color can transform a room. He says it is the "best thing for a budget because no color costs more than another color." The room with the pink curtains to the right was designed by Billy Baldwin. It's interesting how he used the brown ikatdecorative throw pillows as accents. We have an ikat fabric for upholstery that looks very similar by the way. And if you prefer not to diy, we will make custom throw pillows of any size for you.

The best decorators throughout time have known how to, as we say, "recycle." They would understand reupholstering or slipcovering a sofa your grandmother gave you with some of our fabric for upholstery curtains bedding or refreshing a room with some of our decorative throw pillows in ikat or suzani fabric. You don't need a decorator to spruce up kitchen decor with our fun kitchen rugs and mats or make your bathroom look like new with a unique shower curtain. Our new shower curtain in the famous Beverly Hills Hotel coffee shop banana print is fun and glam!

Now you've got the decorating secret. You don't need to spend a fortune to find unique and unusual home decor and decorating ideas. Well-chosen home goods and accents may be all you need. As Dorothy Draper said, "Decorating can be fun!" And be sure to share the secret with your friends by giving them decor gifts from Decorative Things. Our beautiful custom gift wrap is free and we love to send unique gifts for women, gifts for guys or gifts for kids to make things easy for you. Even if you like diy home decor, it's sometimes nice to have help around holidays.

Dorothy Draper also wrote books about entertaining. Be sure to see our Party Decor section for all your party supplies needs. We have fabulous paper plates and napkins, paper hand towels, beverage napkins, serving trays and more party table decor to make your home festive for any holiday.

11 Beautiful Home Interior Design  Styles

Decorating styles have evolved over the centuries in response to the changing tastes of various groups of people. Every style has benefits to the people who will enjoy the home for many years to come. Many styles were born out of previous styles and have evolved into a distinct type of decorating for a certain feel. Each of the following designs expresses personality and taste specific to an era.

1. Shabby Chic

British look that incorporates all-white interior walls, floors, and ceilings accented with vintage items resting on distressed furniture. Soft pastels bring focus and offer a more feminine feel to the design.

2. Swedish Style

An eclectic look is created through a trendy approach called maximalism, which means to make the most of a small space. What may appear to be a hodgepodge of colour is actually a collection of interesting objects arranged for maximum visual appeal. Vibrant colours are used to create focal points throughout the room that beg the visitor to examine each piece more closely.

3. Contemporary

Noticeable design features include solid colours with contrasting properties against a blank slate of walls and floor. Furniture has sleek, straight lines with sharp corners. Few accent pieces are used, which leaves a clean and open look for visual appeal.

4. Classic Contemporary

Softer colour contrasts highlight the art on the walls as the visual emphasis. Rounded furniture lines offer an appealing and warm setting that draws the visitor to sit and rest awhile. Colours are complementary instead of contrasting to draw the entire room into focus without an abrupt focus on one element.

5. Funky

Bulky, comfortable chairs set against the stark lines of tables with metal legs. The visitor is invited to investigate the cubbies and sit for a spell. Every element is clean and visibly interesting. Colours are in the chairs while the rest of the room creates a palette to be accented for visual interest.

6. New York

Wide open rooms are accented with neutral paint colours accented by contrasting furniture. Edges of the room are lined with furniture that allows for easy traffic flow through the main corridors. Eye-catching accents are used as light fixtures, and storage is hidden in beautiful pieces of furniture made of intriguing materials.

7. Traditional

A formal home setting is the most appropriate choice for this style. Choices between many time periods create a sense of timeless tradition in a home that is decorated in the traditional sense. Colours include the jewel tones in coordinating hues. Silks, brocades and satin are the prevalent fabrics used in this style of decorating.

8. Eclectic

As the term conveys, the Eclectic decorating style is varied and can develop into a room that resembles any number of the other decorating styles. Colours are strictly up to the taste of the person who will live with the interior décor. Most people who choose this style do so because they enjoy certain aspects of all the other styles.

9. Garden

Most homes decorated in the Garden style will have a sun room full of plants built onto an exterior wall. The use of live plants inside the house is accompanied by landscape pictures. Large windows allow for sweeping views of the exterior landscape. Interior and outdoor furniture are used inside the home and patio doors are in more than one room. Colours are vibrant and natural to bring the outdoors into each living space.

10. Tuscan

Originating in Italy, the Tuscan style was developed by the tradesmen and farmers that lived throughout Italy’s countryside. As Italians came to this country, their decorating style took hold. Colours include natural hues accented with rich reds and ochers found in the landscape. Muted tones blend the walls, floors, and furniture into a soothing setting that welcomes everyone.

11. Asian

Use of space is central to decorating in the Asian style. Leaving the middle of the room open is essential to convey the openness of heart valued in the Asian cultures of the world. Colours are close to nature and bright colours are used in focal points around each room.

HOME DECORATING TIPS....!!!!!

Kitchen Living room
1.Consider glass-front cabinets. They provide great incentives for forcing you — and your family — to be organized. Any clutter or dishware put back in the wrong place will be visible. Try storing everyday dinnerware above the work surface, while hiding the clutter of pots and pans behind closed doors. 1."If you have something — a lamp, a table, even a chair — with great shape but not quite enough dash, take it to your framer and have them gild it." —Jeffry Weisman
2."Create your own kitchen island. Buy one of those stainless-steel wire mesh trolleys by Metro shelving and get a big slab of stone, or butcher block to put on top." —Birch Coffey 2."Consider setting the furniture — and the carpet — on an angle. It will change the whole dynamic of a room." —Vicente Wolf
3."Find attractive containers for all those items on the kitchen counter. I'm thinking white modern canisters for flour, sugar, pasta, with a matching tray for oils and vinegars." —Penny Drue Baird 3.Toss on a throw. "I draped a Mongolian lamb's wool throw over my lumpy old sofa and suddenly it was luxurious and exotic." —David Mann

    A FEW THOUGHTS ON ENTRYWAYS...

    -----------------------------------------------------------

I've been working on my entryway lately. It's so small so I really have to make sure I use the space very wisely. I already have some fab wallpaper and my gorgeous Sophia Loren print hanging, but now I need to style it up...

I love a gorgeous console piece. A stand out piece is always a good way to go. I also love the idea of a bench or a little seating, a perfect place to take off and put on shoes.

I always love a good basket set. In NYC we are always looking for some extra storage so baskets can be of assistance.
My final thought. A mirror is another great addition to an entryway. A final place to check your outfit and make sure the makeup is looking right. This last one might be one of my favorites. So playful and fun, I just love it.
