Jackie Kennedy knew this. When she moved into the White House, she was conscious to focus on American decorative accents and accessories. The patrician decorator Sister Parish helped her as did others. One thing all the great American decorators have had was ingenuity. In fact, Sister was famous for doing things like buying wood furniture at flea market prices and painting it white for summer homes and using "rag rugs" and patchwork quilts. He loved simple cotton fabrics like ticking and chose to live in a one room studio apartment. In one of his books, Billy Baldwin Decorates, Baldwin talks about how something as simple as color can transform a room. He says it is the "best thing for a budget because no color costs more than another color." The room with the pink curtains to the right was designed by Billy Baldwin.
